Since a bridgeport isn't very stiff in general and the bearings are not heavy-duty, I try to limit the tool projection as much as possible, unless there's some sort of interference; I don't know of a better method to limit tool overhang, and get the best runout in addition, than using a good quality r8 collet. So I'm wonder if there is some reason to get ER40 vs ER32 and a seperate 1" end mill holder. Do the ER40's hold better on say 1/2" shanks? FWIW, I plan to use the 1" mill just to get a .500 inside radius, it will be light duty milling only. Also I have a basic set of 12 R8 collets as well.

Re: Truing a ER40-R8 adapter. I disagree with some of what has been said. First, I will say that no modifications to the R8 taper on the spindle or tool holder should be done UNLESS there is is a problem that can be verified. The spindle taper can be checked for runout at various distances from the nose with an indicator.
